NWR Retaining Wall Monitoring, London, Uk

Key Achievements

•Construction of residential apartments block next to a busy Network Tail retaining wall while the “live” railway tracks remained in operation.
•Design and installation of the retaining wall monitoring scheme.
•Quality assurance procedures

The project

Automated Total Station Monitoring System at Gospel Oak, between Grafton Road Bridge and Lismore Circus. The system was required to establish if any movement or damage will occur to this particular Network Rail asset whilst Keller Geotechnique undertakes piling works directly behind the wall and at later stage during the construction of the residential building.
The challenge

The main challenge was to ensure the smooth operation of NWR asset while the ATS was installed on a private property away from construction site, sighting prisms on the retaining wall and communicating wirelessly with a PC based on site in near real time.

The solution

During the initial phase of monitoring period the communication equipment was relying on GPRS mobile network that later on became unstable. The system was promptly redesigned to operate on radio equipment which allowed to continue without stopping the operations.
